🌐The GSMA Spectrum Policy Director, Carol Sosa Leguizamón, spoke at the ITU's "Transformative Connectivity: Satellite Workshop" in Geneva. The workshop delved into the satellite industry's strides in expanding coverage, enhancing capacity, and integrating with terrestrial technologies. Key discussion points included: 📡 Complementarity of non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) and terrestrial networks (TNs): Exploring synergies to ensure ubiquitous connectivity. 🛰️ Deployment and use cases for 5G NTNs: Showcasing real-world applications and the transformative impact of 5G integrated with satellite tech. 🤝The workshop emphasised the need for stakeholder cooperation and incentives to scale these technologies worldwide. A huge thanks to the ITU-D and GSOA for organising this workshop and to all the participants who shared their insights and visions for a connected future. #mobile #satellite #directtodevice #d2d #ntn #ituwrc #gsma
About us
Spectrum is a finite natural resource that relates to the radio frequencies allocated to communications over the airwaves. Our mission is to ensure mobile operators have timely and affordable access to low-, mid, and high-band spectrum. Without it, mobile operators can’t meet the growing demand for high-speed, mobile broadband services with good coverage in all parts of the world. Sufficient internationally harmonised spectrum is essential to ensure the quality that consumers and businesses have come to expect, and rely on, from mobile networks. We work with governments, regulators, international organisations and the mobile industry to collectively help launch innovative services and connect more people.

🌏The GSMA's Spectrum Director for APAC, Yishen Chan, spoke at the APAC Spectrum Management Conference in Jakarta 🇮🇩. Some of the key takeouts from his interventions include 🎤 - WRC-23 agreed on the allocation of new mobile low-band spectrum (below 1 GHz) and mid-band spectrum in the 3.5 GHz and 6 GHz ranges. This capacity can be used for continued innovation in the mobile sector and will be crucial to realising the digital ambitions of policymakers worldwide. - The 6 GHz band (6.425-7.125 GHz) has been identified for IMT in every ITU region – EMEA, the Americas, and APAC. Technical conditions for 6 GHz spectrum are now globally harmonised, laying the foundation for expanding mobile capacity, especially for 5G-Advanced and beyond. - Governments and regulators in the APAC region can now develop a clear spectrum roadmap, considering the 6 GHz band for meeting future needs for licensed mobile spectrum. - Countries across the APAC region are at different stages of their 5G journey. To realise 5G's full potential, policymakers must ensure the timely availability and efficient assignment of 5G spectrum and support deployment through reasonable spectrum prices and investment-friendly licence terms and conditions. The GSMA was pleased to participate in the first CITEL Inter-American Telecommunication Commission meeting of the new WRC-27 cycle. Regulators can now adopt WRC-23 decisions, identify their needs for the new cycle, participate in international regulatory processes, and plan their roadmaps to allow citizens and industry to get full value from new technologies. The GSMA, in partnership with GSA (Global mobile Suppliers Association), was also delighted to welcome guests to our traditional CITEL reception. It was great reconnecting with stakeholders across the Americas and discussing expectations for WRC-27. Special thanks to Unidad Reguladora de Servicios de Comunicaciones (URSEC) for hosting the meeting! #citel #ituwrc #spectrum #mobile #connectivity #5g #benefitofbillions

The last couple of years have seen countries move away from interventionist spectrum policies such as single wholesale networks (SWNs) to other, more collaborative policies that encourage investment in underserved areas, deliver mobile capacity, and encourage adoption. In this report, the GSMA looks at the demise of this spectrum licensing approach and other more effective solutions to addressing coverage and usage gaps. In March 2024, Vietnam successfully concluded its first spectrum auction, marking a leap towards achieving its ambitious goal of 99% 5G network coverage by 2030. The auction results saw Viettel securing spectrum in the 2.5 - 2.6 GHz band, while VNPT was awarded spectrum in the 3.7 - 3.8 GHz band. Importantly, the auction prices were significantly lower, between 61% and 87% , than the reserve price during the unsuccessful attempt at auctioning the 2.3 GHz band in June 2023. This strategic adjustment to lower reserve prices for this latest auction underscores the critical importance of right spectrum pricing. High reserve prices had posed a risk, deterring bids and highlighting the economic costs attached to unsold spectrum - including slower deployment, reduced network quality, and missed opportunities for new 5G services. Spectrum, while a precious state asset, realises its true value through its application - enhancing mobile services for consumers and enterprises. Lower auction prices have now paved the way for a more secure future in mobile service development, allowing the industry to focus on long-term business cases, network deployment, and embracing technical and commercial trends. #spectrum #5g #spectrumpricing #spectrumassignments #spectrumauctions #spectrummanagement #mobile #connectiviy #vietnam

Technology-neutral spectrum licensing is crucial to allow mobile operators to refarm spectrum used for legacy networks (2G and 3G) for 4G and 5G services at a pace driven by market demand. This report looks closer at the benefits of technology-neutral licences and offers a global status of technology-neutral licensing. It also puts the technology-neutral spectrum in a larger policy context, including how it is related to legacy network sunsets. Last month, European mobile operators and the GSMA unveiled a pioneering manifesto for Europe’s digital future, with spectrum policy as one of the four key calls to action. The manifesto calls on EU policymakers to embrace a new digital infrastructure framework that fosters investment 📊, innovation 🦾, and a harmonised digital market. Recommendations include addressing the telecom market’s fragmentation, implementing more pro-investment spectrum policy, closing regulatory gaps between different digital service providers, and updating historically based rules to reflect current realities.
